With a hot summer almost upon us, there has recently been a fast growing number of customers who order shaved ice through their food delivery app. Huvis, a chemical fiber company (President Shin Yoo-dong, 079980), has recently launched a new shaved ice container made from ECOPET, a PET foam product, in collaboration with Baemin Market. This is the second ECOPET product, following a steamer product that was launched in March.

Conventional containers for shaved ice generate too much non-recyclable waste as they are usually made of paper or transparent PET materials and contain ice packs to prevent the shaved ice from melting.

Huvis ECOPET is a PET sheet that contains fine layers of air and boasts of excellent thermal insulation performance. The material keeps the temperature of food constant for a long time, and a container made of this material is easy to handle because the surface is not too hot or cold. ECOPET does not discharge endocrine-disrupting chemicals or other harmful substances and is also recyclable. This new product is a food container that has been approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).

Since last year, Huvis and Baemin Market have worked together to develop containers that have higher functionality, generate less waste and are harmless to the human body. Their first product launched this March, the ‘Hot Steamer,’ is a product that has a thermal insulation performance of eight degrees higher than conventional steamers. Also launched recently, the ‘Shaved Ice Container that Remains Cool for Longer’ features better cold insulation performance compared to conventional containers for shaved ice. You can enjoy the true taste of shaved ice because the container keeps it from melting until you receive your order and finish it. The product is more durable than paper containers and is expected to reduce packaging costs because it can provide good cold insulation performance without any need for ice packs.

“As different kinds and types of delivery food become diverse, food containers are also required to have new functions. ECOPET is highly valued for maintaining the natural form and taste of the food for a long time with its excellent hot and cold insulation performance,” said Huvis president Shin Yoo-dong. “We will strive further to develop safe food containers in partnership with Baemin Market.”

First developed in 2017, ECOPET has since received many packaging awards both at home and abroad, including the IR 52 Jang Young Shil award from Ministry of Science and ICT in 2020. ECOPET is used not only for food containers but is also applied to various packaging materials, including shock absorbers for display panels. It is also currently under further development for use as lightweight interior materials in various industries, including automobile, electronic devices, and home appliances. (The end)
