Huvis Recognized by the Industry Minister on the 58th Invention Day, Proving its Technological Prowess of Meta-aramid Once Again

2023-05-15

- Lee, Hyeon Yeong, researcher at the R&D Center, recognized by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy for his contribution to the development of the domestic super fiber industry.

Huvis (CEO Shin, You Dong), specializing in chemical and fiber materials, announced on the 15th that it had won the award from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (hereinafter MOTIE) at the 58th Invention Day ceremony hosted and sponsored by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and the Korea Invention Promotion Association. Invention Day is an event to show appreciation to the inventors who have contributed to the development of the national industry.

At the event, Lee, Hyeon Yeong, researcher at the Huvis R&D Center, was awarded the recognition from the MOTIE for his contribution to the growth of the domestic super fiber industry through the development of meta-aramid technology. Meta-aramid is a super fiber that Huvis succeeded in commercializing for the first time in Korea. It is used in fire-protection for safety clothing and industrial filters for its flame resistance, which withstands temperatures as high as 400 degrees, and has excellent heat resistance. The material is recognized for its technological prowess to be designated as a next-generation world-class product in 2018.

Mr. Lee joined the Huvis R&D Center in 2013, participated in the development of the meta-aramid technology as a core member, and contributed to domestically manufacturing firefighting garments and other special fire-protection clothing materials in 2016, which had previously been fully dependent on imports. In addition, he has developed heat-resistant rubber hoses (MRG: Mechanical Rubber Goods) for vehicles, electric insulation paper and other new technologies for various applications. He has also obtained patents for 10 production, 9 reliability, and 6 electric insulation paper technologies further contributing to the development of the domestic super fiber industry.

The meta-aramid electric insulation paper is used in the major components of vehicles, such as motors and generators, and, in particular, can delay thermal runaway, which may occur in an electric vehicle’s batteries, to secure time for passengers to escape in the event of a fire. Based on this advanced technology prowess, Huvis was selected as a Phase III Innovator in the materials, parts, and equipment industry by the MOTIE in March. As a result, the company will be provided with various R&D collaboration opportunities and government support, which will further facilitate the commercialization of the meta-aramid electric insulation paper.

“Following the designation as an Innovator in the materials, parts and equipment industry, this award on Invention Day proved the technological prowess of the Huvis meta-aramid once again,” said a Huvis representative. “Applications of meta-aramid can be expanded into various sectors, such as vehicles, electricity & electronics, energy & environment, and aerospace. By doing so, we will spare no effort to go beyond the domestic market and become the world-leading meta-aramid company. (The end)
