Huvis certified as Korea’s first recycled yarn supplier by Nike
Now consumers can buy sports wear made of Huvis's recycled yarn at Nike stores.
An official from Huvis said that Korea’s largest polyester manufacturer Huvis (CEO Seong-hwan Moon, www.huvis.com) was chosen officially as a supplier of yarn recycled from PET bottles by Nike for the first time in Korea.
This means that Huvis has a great opportunity to join Nike’s environmentally-friendly campaign to change all the products into green materials as an official partner.
 
Huvis’s recycled yarn Ecoever, which is supplied to Nike, is an environmentally-friendly product generated from discarded PET bottles, which reduces waste and CO2 generation. Also, it reduces unnecessary petroleum use and energy generation.
 
General products can be supplied to Nike based on general quality regulations without having to follow special certification process, but recycled yarn and other advanced products, which require special production management and technology, can be provided to Nike only through strict vendor certification process. As of today, a total of 11 vendors are certified globally, and Huvis is the only Korean company among them.
 
Huvis was chosen as a recycled yarn supplier by Burim Corporation, Nike’s official agency in Korea. Burim inspected and chose several domestic recycled yarn suppliers, and verified their technological capability and product quality through a series of seminars. In addition, price bidding and several meetings were followed to build a proper partnership. But Huvis was still one of the candidates.
 
Then, a Nike official in charge of recycled yarn came from the US to visit and inspect Huvis. The visit was made in November 2008, and the official inspected all the manufacturing processes from PET bottle collection and yarn production to fabric production for 2 days. Finally, in February 2009, Nike chose Huvis as its official recycled yarn supplier after 3 months of strict quality inspection.
 
Man-gyu Kim, Head of Filament Yarn (FY) Business Unit of Huvis, said, "We were a late comer but our excellent quality and competitiveness were finally recognized. We will make continuous efforts to develop environmentally-friendly products in partnership with the world's leading clothing makers."
